Just by accident I found a cobblestone building in Brighton, UK, at 3 Portland Street. It has been painted black, and the doorway has been poorly filled in, but it is clearly coursed cobblestones dating at least to the 1840s. Glenn Hinchey email 4/22/2025.
Editor's Note: When programming the structure page for 3 Portland St. (Glenn Hinchey email 4/22/2025), and browsing the Google Maps view of that street, the very similar cobblestone facade structures at 10 Portland Street and 28 Portland Street were found.
There are quite a number of cobblestone-fronted properties in Brighton & Hove. It's very much part of the local vernacular.
The dates of the three in Portland Street that you have enquired about are uncertain. There is a record of no. 28 being part of the North Street Improvement in 1936 (East Sussex Record Office DB/D/84/1/3759) - go to www.thekeep.info for the reference. Brighton Borough Council acquired properties in the street under a compulsory purchase order (CPO) in 1935. The west side of the street has been completely rebuilt since WW2.
Nos 3 and 10 appear to be to be original, with 4-9 as recent infill, although 10 looks consistent with 4-9 and is probably a contemporaneous facsimile. There is a 1949 print of the old 3-9 Portland Street currently online.
Otherwise, that's about all I know. I hope it helps.
All the best
